IRELAND — The Irish equestrian community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Shane Dalton, a gifted show jumper and respected horse producer who has died at the age of 29. His passing has left family, friends, fellow riders, and the wider sporting community grieving the loss of a talented horseman whose passion, humility, and dedication made a lasting impact on Irish show jumping.
Remembered as a “gent inside and out,” Shane Dalton earned widespread admiration not only for his accomplishments in the arena but also for the kindness and respect he showed to everyone he encountered. Shane’s passion for show jumping began at a young age, and he steadily progressed through the sport from pony competitions to becoming one of Ireland’s most promising riders and producers of young horses. A significant milestone in his career came in 2016 when he represented Ireland at the World Breeding Championship for Young Horses in Lanaken aboard Castlelawn Captain Junior (ISH), a stallion owned by his mentor and friend, Gabriel Slattery. Over the years, Shane developed numerous young horses that went on to compete successfully at the international level. Among the most notable were ESI Rocky and Mendoza VDL, both of which reflected his exceptional eye for talent, patience, and commitment to producing quality sport horses.
His achievements included strong performances at many of Ireland’s premier equestrian events, including Balmoral, the RDS, and the Irish Breeders Classic. In 2025, he celebrated one of the defining moments of his career by winning the prestigious 5-Year-Old “Flexible” Young Horse Championship at the Dublin Horse Show in the RDS aboard Unicum H.
Despite his growing list of accomplishments, Shane remained known for his humility and generosity. Fellow riders, owners, grooms, and supporters remember him as someone who was always willing to offer encouragement, share his knowledge, and celebrate the successes of others. Family was at the center of his life, and he also enjoyed a strong passion for motorsport, particularly rallying. Those close to him shared that he had been looking forward to attending the Donegal Rally.
