Morocco 1-0 Scotland: Saibari Scores Fastest Goal of World Cup 2026 to Boost Knockout Hopes

Morocco Beat Scotland 1-0 as Saibari Scores Fastest Goal of World Cup 2026

Morocco moved to the brink of the World Cup 2026 knockout stage with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Scotland, sealed by the fastest goal of the tournament so far from Ismael Saibari.

Record-Breaking Start

Saibari scored after just 71 seconds to settle a hard-fought, physical contest at Boston Stadium in front of a crowd of 64,146 fans at the venue in Massachusetts. The midfielder broke past the Scottish defence, controlled a precise pass from Brahim Díaz, and fired a powerful finish into the roof of the net beyond goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

The strike surpassed the previous fastest goal of the tournament, scored by Czechia’s Michal Sadilek after five minutes and seven seconds against South Africa. It is worth noting the all-time World Cup record remains held by Turkey’s Hakan Şükür, who scored just 11 seconds into a match against South Korea in 2002, while the fastest World Cup goal by an African player belongs to Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan, scored against the Czech Republic in 2006.

The goal also marked a personal milestone for Saibari: he became only the second African player to score in each of his first two World Cup appearances, joining Egypt’s Mohamed Salah on that list. He had also scored in Morocco’s opening 1-1 draw with Brazil the previous weekend.

Morocco Dominate, Scotland Toothless

Morocco completed 601 passes against Scotland — the most by an African team in a World Cup match on record since 1966, according to OptaJoe.

Morocco continued to threaten after the break. They hit the woodwork five minutes into the second half when Saibari met a cutback from Bilal El Khannouss, his attempt deflecting off Jack Hendry and onto the bar. Soon after, Gunn produced a fine save to deny an El Khannouss header from an Achraf Hakimi corner — with Hakimi regularly booed by the crowd throughout.

Scotland struggled to create clear-cut chances in response. Ryan Christie fired over after being teed up by Scott McTominay on 64 minutes, and McTominay later hit the side-netting late on, but a Scotland goal proved elusive.

Group C Picture

The result moved Morocco to four points, putting them temporarily top of Group C ahead of Brazil’s fixture. Morocco next face Haiti in Atlanta, while Scotland must take on Brazil in Miami as they look to keep their own knockout hopes alive.

Off the pitch, Saibari’s eye-catching form is also drawing transfer interest: the 25-year-old, born in Spain and raised in Belgium, is reportedly closing in on a $63 million transfer from PSV Eindhoven to Bayern Munich.
