According to the Portland Police Bureau, the fatal collision occurred on June 19, 2026, on southbound Interstate 5 near Exit 299A, just south of the Marquam Bridge. Authorities said Doherty was riding a 2002 Harley-Davidson motorcycle equipped with a sidecar when the crash took place.
Preliminary findings indicate that after negotiating a left-hand curve while exiting the Marquam Bridge, the motorcycle left its lane of travel and struck a concrete barrier. Investigators reported that no other vehicles were involved in the incident.
Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene, including personnel from Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue who happened to be nearby at the time of the crash. Portland Fire & Rescue crews also responded and immediately began lifesaving efforts, but despite their attempts, Jason Doherty was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police confirmed that Doherty was wearing a helmet during the crash. However, authorities noted that it was a half-shell novelty helmet that was not approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The Portland Police Bureau’s Major Crash Team continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
