Tributes have been pouring in following the passing of Dr Kelly Fredericks, who died on Thursday, leaving family, friends, colleagues, and members of the Sydenham community in deep shock and sadness.
Friends and loved ones have taken to social media to remember Dr Fredericks as a kind-hearted and compassionate individual who consistently put others first. Many have described her as someone who brought warmth, strength, and positivity into every space she entered, with her presence leaving a lasting impact on those around her.
Sherwyn Cupido-Weaich paid tribute to her, describing her as a “rebel with a cause,” and praising the way she moved through life with honesty, courage, and compassion.
“Kelly had a way of making people feel seen. She brought laughter, light and presence into every space she entered. She was not just beautiful on the outside. She had a heart that people will remember, a spirit that could not be copied, and a love that will stay with those who knew her,” he shared.
Another tribute from Linley Ryan highlighted the emotional impact of her passing, noting that she had a rare ability to touch people’s hearts and would be deeply missed.
Dr Fredericks was a respected Family Medicine specialist with more than a decade of experience across both public and private healthcare sectors. She had a special interest in allergies and was actively involved in academic medicine.
She also lectured at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and contributed to the training and assessment of future healthcare professionals through national board examination panels. Nine months before her passing, she featured in a health-focused initiative after co-opening the Glenwood Family Practice with her colleague, Dr Darnae Santos.
Community members and local leaders have expressed shock at her sudden passing. Domenic King of Combined Community Watch described her as a well-loved and accomplished professional whose contributions brought pride to the community.
Dr Fredericks is being remembered not only for her medical expertise and academic contributions, but also for her compassion, kindness, and dedication to improving the lives of others. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
