WINDSOR, ONTARIO — The University of Windsor community is mourning the loss of Dr. Alan Wildeman, President Emeritus and former Vice-Chancellor, whose visionary leadership, unwavering commitment to students, and dedication to community transformation left an enduring legacy on the institution and the Windsor-Essex region.

News of Dr. Wildeman’s passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community leaders who remember him as a respected educator and transformative leader whose decade-long presidency helped shape the modern University of Windsor.

Dr. Wildeman served as President and Vice-Chancellor from 2008 to 2018, guiding the university through a period of significant growth, innovation, and expanded community engagement. During his tenure, he championed initiatives that strengthened academic excellence, advanced research, and deepened the university’s role as a driving force for regional development.

Among his most notable accomplishments was the expansion of the university’s downtown presence, fostering stronger connections between the institution and the City of Windsor. He also oversaw the opening of the Ed Lumley Centre for Engineering Innovation and supported the creation of new spaces that enhanced medical education, research, and the creative arts.

While his achievements are visible across campus, colleagues say Dr. Wildeman’s greatest legacy was his profound commitment to students. He believed deeply in the transformative power of education and worked tirelessly to create opportunities that empowered learners from all backgrounds.
