A tragic shooting at the Butte County Library in Chico, California, on Monday evening left two adults dead and a child injured, according to the Chico Police Department. Authorities have arrested 18-year-old Bradley Scott Sayer of Chico in connection with the incident.
Police said the shooting occurred shortly after 5:12 p.m. local time, when dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire and panic inside the library. Officers responded within minutes and entered the building as the emergency unfolded.
According to officials, the suspect allegedly opened fire inside the public library while it was in operation, causing chaos among patrons. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and secured the area as people inside sought safety.
Authorities reported that as law enforcement entered the building, the suspect attempted to flee through a rear exit. Officers positioned outside were able to apprehend him without further incident, and no exchange of gunfire occurred between police and the suspect.
Two adults were pronounced dead at the scene. A child was also injured in the shooting and transported to a nearby hospital. Officials have stated that the child’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. The identities of the victims have not yet been released, pending notification of their families.
