HICKORY, NORTH CAROLINA — The Hickory community is mourning the tragic loss of Alex Austin, a 19-year-old whose life was cut short following a motorcycle accident on US Highway 70 SE. According to the Hickory Police Department, the crash occurred on US Highway 70 SE near 21st Street Lane SE. Investigators said Alex was traveling eastbound on his motorcycle when it collided with the rear of a 2021 Hyundai Kona traveling in the same lane.
Emergency personnel responded quickly to the scene and transported Alex to Catawba Valley Medical Center. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later airlifted to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for specialized trauma treatment. Despite the efforts of medical teams, he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Authorities have stated that the investigation into the collision remains ongoing. At this time, no charges have been filed as investigators continue working to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal crash.
